Learn the families first

Floral, oriental, woody, and fresh are the four broad families. Most people gravitate to one or two without realising it. Spend a week noticing which notes you reach for in candles, shower gel, and laundry — the pattern is usually clearer than you expect.

Test on skin, never on card

Paper strips show the top notes and nothing else. Apply to the inside of the wrist, leave it alone, and check again at the four-hour mark. The dry-down is what people around you will actually experience.

Build a small wardrobe rather than committing to a single bottle: something light for daytime, something warmer for evening, and one that belongs entirely to a season.
