The Science of Healthy Skin
Healthy skin is less about a twelve-step ritual and more about consistency. The barrier — the outermost layer of the skin — keeps water in and irritants out, and almost every visible complaint traces back to it being disrupted.
Start with the barrier
Before actives, before exfoliation, before anything with a percentage on the label, the barrier needs to be intact. In practice that means a gentle cleanser, a humectant applied while skin is still damp, and something occlusive to seal it in. If a serum stings on application, that is not the formula working — that is a barrier asking for a break.
Ingredients worth the shelf space
Niacinamide at four to five percent helps with redness and oil balance without the irritation that higher concentrations can bring. Azelaic acid earns its place for anyone dealing with both texture and tone at once. Vitamin C belongs in the morning, but only when the formula is stable and stored away from light.
Building tolerance to retinoids
Retinoids reward patience more than any other category. Start twice weekly, buffer with moisturiser, and build up over six to eight weeks rather than six to eight days. Most people who conclude that retinol does not suit them simply moved too quickly.
Everything beyond that is optional. The routine that works is the one you will actually repeat on a Tuesday night when you are tired.
